July Updates

I hope your writing is heating up with the summer sunshine. For many writers, the combination of kids, vacations, and summer sun keeps them away from the keyboard. And we wonder if editors are all on vacation anyway. But summer can also be a great time to stretch and try some short forms or season inspired work. We hope you find this month’s line up gives you some sizzling ideas.

Be sure to check out the market news we’ve heard in Inside Markets. The economy is still making a lot of magazine publishers nervous and we’re definitely not seeing many launches. So, since this is a great time to appreciate the magazines we still have – why not collect some sample issues and read, read, read in the summer sun.

Bonnie Davis talks about the importance of making your stories real in Storytellers. Reality plays a part in even the most fantastic fiction – it’s all part of making the reader believe.

This month’s Meter Readers has another treat from Kelly Fineman: the double dactyl. This form is fun, whimsical, and totally kid pleasing.

Summer travel is the focus of this month’s Fresh Ideas -- Gabrielle Linnell takes us on a travel idea adventure.

This month, Heather Montgomery gives us a peek at all the “soldiers” at her disposal – what resources does she depend on? Check out Heather’s bookshelf in That’s a Fact.

As always, we aim to have something delightful in every department – Naomi Downing’s Word Wizard will help you understand how to stay in control of the pacing and tempo of your prose – this is great stuff!

And if you feel especially inspired, why not share an article about your writing journey with your fellow magazine writers? We’re always open to new material for In the Beginning and In My Office. Just drop us a line.
