WHAT THEY WANT:

Although they don’t have their guidelines online we can assume from the sample issue that they want what most regional parenting magazines want – short nonfiction with a regional slant.

ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC ISSUE

The Hands-On Parent
August 2007

From the Fridge: A from-the-editor piece showcasing events in the area and introducing some of the articles in the magazine

Report Card: News and Views from the Area Schools. Clearly an in-house piece about area school happenings – this issue mostly registration and open house dates.

Young Performers Bring Family Fun to Missouri State Fair Pepsi Grandstand. Another in-house piece about the celebrities slated to appear at the fair. This was the “cover feature” since Corbin Blue is the cover.

Back to Class with Class by Martin W. Schwatz. The editor talks with local mechants about what is popular for kids. [Two pages, includes a sidebar on the “sales tax holiday” and four photos.]

Separation Anxiety: Sending Mama’s Boy Off to School by Rebecca Carroll. An essay on the pain of sending your little boy off to school and watching him make that big separation influenced by peers to “be cool” and not hug mom in public. 9 paragraphs – 450 - 500 words. [1 page with photo – magazine also runs bio with photo of authors]

Center Section – This four-page is normally a pull-out. This time it’s a pull out about the things available at the Missouri State Fair.

The One-Line Philosopher by Dave Weinbaum. Clearly a regular feature – jokes by the publisher.

Don’t Cut the Kid by Dave Weinbaum. Essay about the value of sports to a kid’s self-image and maturity. Two pages – around 1000 words. One photo.

Home Sweet School by Mavis Day – The president of the Jefferson City Home Educators talks about reasons to homeschool. One page, about 550 – 600 words

August Events – local calendar

Giving Kids a Shot At Good Health by Candy Shaw. Article by a local nurse on vaccinations. Includes a sidebar on the vaccine abbreviations and what they stand for. Also a short sidebar of the Missouri Immunization Requirements for 2007 – 08. Two pages. The article is about 500 words, with sidebars probably equal in length.

May You Never Do This by Sydnee Crain. A poem about a mother’s panic over a daughter who is still out at four am.
