KIKI
“For Girls With Style and Substance”
September 2008

From the website:

“Our editorial mission is: to help each reader develop a sense of style that reflects her own personality; and to nurture in her the sense of confidence that comes from being comfortable in her own skin, whatever her style.”

Designed to be like a course in fashion, Kiki goes still further. “Through the lens of fashion, Kiki encourages girls to explore other disciplines (business, geography, fine art, craft, history, world culture, even math) and shows them that having fun with style and artistry is completely compatible with intelligence and creativity

From the guidelines: Query first with a detailed article idea – query can be sent by email or post – but they don’t actually give an email address online for the submissions. They only email I have is the one connected to the contact form on the page -- info@kikimag.com .

“Proposed articles which focus on other than historical or scientific topics must rely on primary sources. Such manuscripts must be accompanied by a complete list of sources, telephone numbers, and reference materials, if applicable. Proposed articles that are historical or scientific in nature may make use of valid secondary sources, of which a complete list must accompany the manuscript unless the information is considered common knowledge in the field.”

One odd thing in the guidelines is a mention that “Unless submission is stated to be a possible work for hire, submission will be considered property of Kiki magazine.” So, it would appear that it’s a good idea to mention that you’re a freelance writer submitting the query idea as a possible article at their usual rates. A magazine like this may possibly get press releases (which aren’t paid for) so that may be why you need to alert them to your desire to be paid – I don’t know, but I would be sure to mention that in both the query and cover letters.

Content is broken down into segments in the magazine including: “From the Studio,” “Art Bin,” “World Beat,” “Biz Buzz,” “Kiki Care,” “Your Style,” and “Kiki Fun”
