Nature Friend is a conservative Christian publication and that needs to be remembered when crafting an article. They do not want discussions of evolution in the articles. From the magazine: “Nature Friend upholds the principles of the Inspired Word of God, high Christian Family Standards, Divine Creation, and practical Christian Stewardship of God’s Creation.”

Also says: “The Nature Friend writer’s guide is available for $4 postpaid.”

WHAT THEY WANT:

Fiction: 300 - 900 words. They are not interested in talking animals.
Nonfiction: 300 – 900 words, average word length 500. They like photo essays, and unique animals. They also look for articles on unusual natural phenomenon. They particularly need interactive material – experiments and activities related to science and nature with photographs. Include step-by-step procedures. Also buys puzzles.

In the Beginning God Created Snowflakes [Kevin and Bethany Shank] Interesting snowflake facts given in a sidebar – actually about amounts of snowfall in different places. Article is personal experience, very sensory, about how the family experiences snowfall. Then slips into facts about snow. How snow is formed, how it is photographed, and how it reflects on God.

Bats: Flying Mammals [Zachary Gruber] Young reader report about bats – lots of facts.

Creation Closeups – reader photos.

Draw a Black-Capped Chickadee. [Judy Kauffman] A regular feature helps children draw something from nature (they also show reader art from previous issue on drawing grapes.)

The Story Behind the Name: Counting the Days [John Hudson Tiner] Tells how the calendar came to be and where the names for months and days comes from. Includes an editor’s note basically saying they don’t agree with mythology in it’s scientific or spiritual views.

Who Am I? A riddle to guess the name of a creature described.

Learning By Doing: Poem Art. [Miriam Hockstetler] Turning a descriptive poem into a creative poster. Uses numbered step-by-step directions with lots of subheadings – 18 steps total. Photos of finished projects.
